Around this time every year, commercial family fishermen near Cordova, Alaska gear up and fish at a moment’s notice for wild Copper River King and Sockeye salmon. The season is closely managed for a sustainable harvest, often with 12-hour fishing windows for these hardworking men and women. May 18 was the first opening of the season, and during the first two-day fishing period, a whopping 93,000 fish were collectively caught, landing promptly into gentle handlers for shipping to restaurants and retailers all over the world.

Last Saturday, Ivar’s Acres of Clams and Executive Chef Chris Garr were invited to participated in the annual Bacon and Beer Classic at Safeco Field. More than 4,000 food and beer lovers ascended upon the field sampling dozens of tastes. Chef Garr’s twice bacony dish was voted as the Best Savory Dish. This was the second award for the team within the four years of participating in the event. By popular demand, enjoy the award-winning recipe for your next gathering.

“Opening Day” is a popular tradition here in Seattle, and throughout the Northwest, as the first Saturday in May marks the official start of boating season. Seattleites ditch their rain jackets and reach for sunglasses and sunscreen to embrace warmer days. In celebration, vessels big and small flock to Portage Bay and parade slowly through the Montlake Cut. The annual event brings together local boaters and water aficionados alike in one of the nation’s largest regional celebrations of water, boating and springtime.
